Where to stay in Namibia
Namibia offers accommodation ranging from international-standard hotels and boutique guesthouses to safari lodges, tented camps and self-catering properties. Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay have the widest choice of hotels, while lodges and camps predominate around Etosha National Park, Sossusvlei, Damaraland and other wildlife and desert destinations.
Many lodges are located in remote settings and offer meals, guided activities and excursions as part of the stay. Accommodation in popular areas can fill quickly during the peak travel season from July to October, so advance booking is recommended, particularly in and around national parks.
Camping is widely available throughout Namibia and is particularly popular with self-drive travellers. Campsites range from well-equipped facilities in national parks and private reserves to remote sites on farms and community conservancies. Many provide ablution blocks, braai facilities and electricity, although facilities at more isolated sites may be basic.
Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) operates campsites in several national parks and protected areas, including Etosha, Namib-Naukluft and the Skeleton Coast. Advance booking is recommended for popular campsites, particularly during the peak travel season. Wild camping is discouraged, and travellers should seek permission from landowners or local authorities before camping outside designated sites.
