Where to stay in Trinidad and Tobago
Major international chain hotels represented in Port of Spain include Crowne Plaza, Hilton, Hyatt and Marriott. There are a number of smaller hotels in the surrounding areas. The capital is possibly the best place to stay for the business traveller in all the Caribbean islands. In Tobago, there is a growing number of international-standard resort hotels alongside the many smaller private hotels and guest houses. A 10% government room tax and VAT are levied.
Note: All types of accommodation must be booked months in advance for the Carnival.
The Tourism and Industrial Development Company Ltd publishes a list of guest houses found throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Great places to meet Trinidadians, guesthouses are ubiquitous, regularly inspected, and average (US$65) per night.
A couple of beaches, such as Vessigny on Trinidad and Canoe Bay on Tobago, have established camping facilities, although visitors from North America and Europe should expect them to be comparatively basic with similar sites in their own countries. Camping adventure tours in the national parks are possible with a guide.
Ecohotels: A relatively new breed, ecohotels are taking off in Trinidad & Tobago now the country’s ecological credentials are being internationally recognised (particularly on Tobago). Facilities fall somewhere between top-end guest house and luxury hotel, although with to-die-for locations and a sense of environmental wellbeing, many visitors will relish sampling the country’s latest accommodation phenomenon.
Youth Hostels: A sprinkling of hostels can be found across Port of Spain, with a couple also in operation on Tobago. Room prices can be under US£20 per night for dorm-style accommodation. Facilities, although simple, can be surprisingly amenable, with private rooms sometimes available and a host of knowledgeable staff on hand to advise about local activities.
