Where to stay in Algeria
Accommodation options in Algeria are concentrated in major cities such as Algiers, Oran and Constantine, where visitors will find a mix of international-standard hotels, mid-range business hotels and smaller locally run establishments. International chains are present in the capital and cater mainly to business travellers and diplomatic visitors, offering higher standards of comfort and service.
Outside major cities, accommodation choices become more limited. In smaller towns, hotels may be basic but functional, and English may not be widely spoken. Advance booking is advisable, particularly during peak travel periods or national holidays. Standards can vary, and facilities such as Wi-Fi and hot water may not always be consistent.
In the Sahara and other remote areas, accommodation is typically arranged through tour operators and may include desert lodges, guesthouses or organised camps. Independent travel to these regions is often restricted, so most visitors experience them as part of structured itineraries.
There are very few designated public campsites in Algeria, and facilities are limited compared with European standards. Wild camping is technically possible in remote desert areas, but is not recommended without local knowledge, permits where required, and experienced guides.
In the Sahara, overnight desert experiences are usually organised through licensed tour operators, who provide structured camps with tents, meals and local guides. These organised camps offer a safer and more practical way to experience desert landscapes than attempting independent camping.
