Currency information

British Pound (GBP; symbol £) = 100 pence. Notes are in denominations of £50, £20, £10 and £5. Coins are in denominations of £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p.

Scotland has its own banknotes in denominations of £100, £50, £20, £10, £5, and limited £1 notes. No special coins are issued in Scotland.

Both the British pound and Scottish pound have the same value and are accepted throughout Scotland.

Credit cards

American Express, MasterCard and Visa are all widely accepted.

ATM

ATMs are available across the country. But if you're heading to a remote location, it is best to have some cash with you.

Travellers cheques

Traveller's cheques are no longer popular and should be avoided.

Banking hours

Mon-Fri 0900-1700 (there may be some variations in closing times). Some banks also open on Saturdays.

Currency restriction

While there are no restrictions on the import and export of local or foreign currency, you must declare amounts exceeding £10,000 if you are travelling between Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) or travelling from another country.

Currency exchange

You can exchange foreign currency in banks, bureaux de change, post offices and some hotels.
