Tunisia Shopping and nightlife
Shopping in Tunisia
Shopping in Tunisia is as much about atmosphere as it is about what you buy. The country's medinas — particularly in Tunis, Sousse and Kairouan — are labyrinths of narrow alleys filled with the scent of spices, the gleam of brass lamps and the sound of craftsmen at work. Here, traditional souks specialise by trade: leather goods in one quarter, carpets in another, perfumes and spices elsewhere.
Tunisian ceramics, especially from Nabeul, are popular souvenirs, featuring intricate blue, green and yellow designs. Handwoven carpets from Kairouan are highly regarded, while olive wood carvings, copperware and leather slippers (babouches) are widely available. Dates from southern oases and locally produced olive oil also make distinctive edible gifts.
In coastal resort towns, shops tend to cater more to tourists, offering handicrafts alongside beachwear and contemporary goods. Larger cities such as Tunis also have modern shopping centres with international brands.
Bargaining is customary in traditional souks and markets, and prices are rarely fixed. A polite and good-humoured approach is expected. In contrast, prices in modern shops and malls are fixed.
Nightlife in Tunisia
Nightlife in Tunisia is generally relaxed rather than high-energy, though there are livelier pockets in major cities and resort areas. In Tunis, the capital, a selection of hotel bars, lounges and nightclubs caters to both locals and visitors. The suburb of Gammarth is known for its beachside venues and more contemporary club scene.
Coastal resorts such as Hammamet, Sousse and Djerba offer a mix of hotel entertainment, beach bars and seasonal clubs, particularly during the summer months. Live music, DJ nights and themed events are common in tourist-focused areas.
Alcohol is available in licensed hotels, restaurants and certain bars, though it is not as widely visible as in many European destinations. Tunisia is a predominantly Muslim country, and nightlife tends to be more restrained outside tourist zones. Some venues may have dress codes, and it is advisable to carry identification.
