Restaurants in Perth
Despite its isolation from the impressive dining options of Australia’s eastern states, Perth has established itself as a competitive epicurean destination with a healthy supply of quality restaurants for all budgets.
Focusing on fresh, local produce, the city’s modern Australian cuisine is popular, as is food from the country’s nearby Asian neighbours. Perth’s proximity to leading Australian wine producing region, Margaret River, means that no matter what dining option you choose, there’ll be a local wine to match it.
The Perth restaurants below have been hand-picked by our guide author and are grouped in the following three price categories:
Expensive (over A$90)
Moderate (A$60 to A$90)
Cheap (under A$60)
The prices quoted above are for an average three-course meal and half a bottle of house wine or cheapest equivalent per person. Tipping isn’t customary unless service has been exceptional.
Fraser's
In Kings Park, and offering city views and the Swan River, the elegant Fraser's is one of Perth's best restaurants - that kind of special occasion venue used for marriage proposals and anniversaries. Superb cuisine is focused on fresh local produce with an emphasis on excellent seafood, and there's an impressive Australian-driven wine list too. In summer book a table on the terrace.
Zafferano
With the best views of the Swan River in Perth, this award-winning restaurant is a local favourite, serving up some of the finest quality seafood in town. It has an impressive wine list to match and its Mediterranean menu is stunning for weekend breakfast, lunch or dinner. Book a table close to the water and ask for recommendations
Restaurant Amuse
If the string of awards doesn’t get you to Restaurant Amuse, chef Hadleigh Troy’s impeccable world-class pedigree and fabulous 10-course degustation menu, complete with matched wine menu, should. Its sedate surroundings mean the fare is the star here and quite simply, the food is amongst Australia’s finest. Reservations essential.
Andaluz Bar and Tapas
With a swag of awards, Andaluz is an intimate, contemporary tapas joint with a great selection of fine cervezas and vinos from Australia and beyond. A sleek, stylish bar in the city’s legal heart, you’ll find comfy, deep leather chesterfields alongside Parisian-style tables without a hint of clutter.
Creatures NextDoor
This chic little venue is home to a local microbrewery, but its Australian pub and tapas food is among the best in town. Located on the water at Fremantle, dine alfresco or among the cosy, industrial décor whilst watching the beer artisans at work. The wood-fired pizza tastes as good as it smells and the brewery is a good spot for a weekend brunch. Whatever you’re eating, don’t forget to try a local Little Creatures ale.
Must Wine Bar Bistro
As hard as it is to leave those freshly shucked oysters, charcuterie plates and dozens of brilliant Western Australian wines, drag yourself off the comfy ottomans in the bar and head into this Parisian-style bistro where the French provincial-influenced cuisine (with a twist) is based on fresh seasonal products and local inspirations. The room buzzes with the chatter of locals, making for a fun night out with friends.
Amber Jacks
You simply cannot visit Perth and not watch the sun setting over the Indian Ocean. When you do, Amber Jacks is a great purse-friendly option for trying some freshly-caught seafood. The best way to experience it though, is by buying some fish and chips at this upmarket chippie, crossing the road to Cottesloe Beach, and dining alfresco on a picnic blanket. Leave yourself plenty of time to gather your supplies before sunset, it gets busy here.
Cicerello's Seafood Restaurant
Fish and chip shops are plentiful around Perth, but Cicerello's in Fremantle is the oldest and the best. Housed on the boardwalk at Fisherman's Wharf, make sure you grab a waterside seat before choosing from a huge range of fresh seafood, including oysters, mussels, crabs and crayfish. They’ve been serving good grub here for more than 100 years and judging by the crowds, it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon.
Alfred’s Kitchen
This Perth institution has been flipping patties since 1946. With a reputation for hearty, wholesome food, there’s no shortage of burgers to try with over 40 on the menu. Whilst the hamburgers and steaks keep the crowds coming, the lentil burgers and veggie alternatives are just as good. Dine alfresco with people from all walks of life at this great, late night destination.
