The official currency in the British Virgin Islands is the United States Dollar (USD; symbol US$), which is divided into 100 cents. Banknotes are in denominations of US$100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1. Coins are in denominations of US$1, and 50, 25, 10, 5, and 1 cents.
Credit cards, particularly Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger businesses in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). However, some smaller establishments, especially on less developed islands like Anegada, may prefer cash payments.
ATMs are available on the main islands, with Tortola and Virgin Gorda offering several machines, particularly in commercial centres such as Road Town and Spanish Town. However, islands like Jost Van Dyke and Anegada do not have ATM facilities.
British Virgin Islands duty free
Travellers aged 18 and over may bring the following items into the British Virgin Islands:
• 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars.
• 1L of wine or spirits.
