Raleigh-Durham International Airport is situated at Morrisville, 20km (13 miles) southeast of Durham and 20km (13 miles) northwest of Raleigh./p>
Midway between the cities of Raleigh and Durham in North Carolina, Raleigh-Durham International Airport is the second busiest in the state. Our guide to the airport provides information on how to get there, where to stay and the facilities available inside the terminals.
Information desks (tel: +1 919 840 2123) are located in the baggage reclaim areas of both terminals. Visitor services representatives and volunteers are present throughout the day to answer passenger and visitor questions.
Free buses run between the two terminals and the park-and-ride car parks. A moving walkway links the terminals.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport is located at the mid-point between Raleigh and Durham, off Interstate 40, Interstate 540 and Highway 70.
From Durham, take Durham Freeway south and turn onto southbound Interstate 40; then take exit 284B (Airport Boulevard) to the airport.
From Raleigh, take Interstate 40 northwards and depart at exit 285 (Aviation Parkway) for the airport site.
Access from Interstate 540 is available from exit 2.
Public Transport
Bus: Triangle Transit Authority's bus 100 (tel: +1 919 485 7433; www.gotriangle.org) links Raleigh-Durham International Airport with central Raleigh (journey time: at least 45 minutes). Long distance bus services (tel: +1 800 231 2222; www.greyhound.com) operate from Raleigh’s main transit centre.
Taxi: RDU Airport Taxi Service (tel: +1 919 840 7277; www.rdutaxiinc.com) provides pre-bookable services to a number of local destinations. to Raleigh and Durham journey time is about 30 minutes. Taxi booths are available outside both terminals.
Terminal facilities
Wi-Fi internet access (the first 45 minutes of which is accessible free of charge) is available throughout Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Public telephones are located within the terminal buildings. A ‘post drop’ facility is housed on the ground floor of Terminal 2, and phone charging points are provided in waiting areas.
There are numerous cafés, bars and restaurants in Terminal 2 offering everything from pizza to seafood. A more limited offering is available in Terminal 1.
There is a newsagent, electronics shop and a female fashion accessories outlet in Terminal 1. Terminal 2 offers duty-free shopping for international passengers as well as numerous specialized outlets, from clothing retailers and a golf accessories store to bookshops and a pharmacy.
A lost property service is run by the RDU Police office (tel: +1 919 840 7553). Luggage trolleys are available to hire for a fee.
Airport facilities
Business services (including conference room hire) can be arranged through the airport's guest services (tel: +1 919 840 2123). Two airline lounges are available in Terminal 2; these are run by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
Extensive meeting and events facilities can be found at the nearby Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Centre (tel: +1 919 941 5050; www.sheratonrtp.com).
All toilets, car parks and airport shuttles are wheelchair-accessible and there are dedicated spaces in all car parks at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The terminal is fully accessible, with lifts connecting all areas. TDD telephones are available throughout each terminal. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel.
There are hourly and daily rate car parks between the two terminals. Two economy long-stay park-and-ride car parks are located further away, with courtesy bus services linking to the terminals. A further two park-and-ride areas are used for overflow parking and a free waiting area is provided for drivers meeting arrivals. Car hire companies at Raleigh-Durham International Airport include: Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, E-Z, Hertz, National, Payless and Thrifty. Shuttle buses transport passengers from outside Arrivals to the pick-up areas.
Among the more luxurious options near Raleigh-Durham International Airport, the 331-room Sheraton offers many facilities expected of a high-end hotel. This includes a choice of dining areas, extensive business facilities, and a range of leisure facilities including jogging trails and tennis courts.
