Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is one of two major international airports in southeast Florida, and serves as a major hub for domestic and some international routes. The terminals are within walking distance of each other; there is also a shuttle transfer service that leaves from level 1 of the multistorey car park.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport connects to the Florida Turnpike, Interstate 95, Interstate 595 and Route 1.
From central Fort Lauderdale, take either Route 1 or Interstate 95 south. If using the former, follow the route until the airport exit; while if using the latter, turn off onto the eastbound Interstate 595 and follow the signs to the airport site. The total drive time from central Fort Lauderdale to the airport is approximately 15 minutes.
Public Transport
Rail:Tri-Rail (tel: +1 800 874 7245; www.tri-rail.com) train services run to Miami International Airport, Broward County and Palm Beach County. Free shuttle buses connect Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport to the nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach. The nine-minute ride from the airport to Fort Lauderdale Station costs US$3.75.
Bus:BCT Mass Transit (tel: +1 954 357 8400; www.broward.org/bct) operates daily services (bus 1) from stop 7 at the Rental Car Center to central Fort Lauderdale (fare: US$2).
Shuttle:Go Shuttle (tel: +1 954 561 8888; www.floridalimo.com) runs door-to-door shared-ride services. Check with the Transportation Podium located on the lower level outside each terminal for further information. The fare to central Fort Lauderdale is around US$13.
Taxi:Taxis and yellow cabs (tel: +1 954 777 7777), including wheelchair-accessible vans, are readily available. Fares to Fort Lauderdale average around US$20, and the ride generally takes 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
Terminal facilities
ATMs are available throughout Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Bureaux de change services can be found in Terminals 2 and 4.
Free Wi-Fi internet access is available throughout Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Additionally, paid-for internet kiosks are located in Terminals 1 to 3. Public telephones are situated at various points throughout Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Fax facilities are available in Terminal 2.
Passengers can choose from a wide variety of places to eat within each terminal at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. These include Italian-style restaurants, ice cream parlours, coffee shops and fast-food outlets. There are also two cafés in the Rental Car Center.
Duty-free (for international passengers) is available in Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Other shops at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport include newsagents, specialist fashion boutiques and gift shops.
Luggage trolleys are available on the upper and lower levels of each terminal and in the multistorey car park. Luggage storage (tel: +1 954 359 5505) is available in all terminals. The lost and found office (tel: +1 954 359 2247) can handle passenger enquiries about misplaced luggage or personal items – missing belongings can also be reported via a form on the airport’s website.
Airport facilities
Self-service Business Service Centres (tel: +1 954 359 7610) are located in each terminal, offering basic business services such as ATMs, currency exchange and phone cards. The Hilton Garden Inn Fort Lauderdale Airport-Cruise Port (tel: +1 954 924 9204; www.hiltongardeninn.com), a few minutes by free shuttle from the airport, has a 24-hour business centre as well as four meeting rooms and one boardroom for hire. The nearby Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel (tel: +1 954 920 3500; www.starwoodhotels.com) also offers business and conference facilities, with 16 meeting rooms equipped with high-speed internet access.
The short- and long-term multistorey car park provides covered parking for more than 12,000 vehicles and has direct access to all terminals. The off-site Airport Economy Parking offers long-term parking rates and is connected to the terminals by free 24-hour shuttle buses. Valet parking (tel: +1 954 359 6931) is available within the multistorey car park. General parking information can be obtained from the parking office (tel: +1 954 359 0200).
Car hire companies represented at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport include: Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, E-Z Rent a Car, Hertz, National, Payless, Royal and Thrifty. These operators each have desks on-site, at the Rental Car Center. This building is located within walking distance of Terminal 1, with free shuttles ferrying passengers from Terminals 2, 3 and 4.
Housing an on-site restaurant, lounge bar and a range of business facilities, the Hilton Garden Inn is just a short drive south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
