Currency & Money
Swedish Krona (SEK; symbol kr) = 100 öre. Notes are in denominations of kr1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 20. Coins are in denominations of kr10, 5, 2 and 1.
Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are widely accepted. Sweden is largely cashless, and many shops and restaurants prefer card or mobile payments (Swish, Apple Pay, Google Pay).
There are no restrictions on importing or exporting Swedish kronor or other currencies within the EU, but amounts of €10,000 or more (or equivalent) must be declared when entering or leaving the EU.
Sweden duty free
Sweden's duty-free allowance for travellers arriving from within the EU:
If you are travelling from another EU country, you can bring goods into Sweden for personal use without paying customs duty or tax, provided the goods are not for resale and taxes were paid in the country of purchase. If you exceed the following indicative limits, customs officials may ask for proof that the goods are for personal use:
• 800 cigarettes or 400 cigarillos or 200 cigars or 1kg of tobacco.
• 90L of still wine (of which up to 60L may be sparkling wine).
• 110L of beer.
• 10L of spirits over 22% alcohol by volume or 20L of fortified wine or other beverages up to 22%.
• Travellers under 18 years old may not bring in tobacco products, and travellers under 20 years old may not bring in alcohol.
Sweden's duty-free allowance for travellers arriving from outside the EU:
If you are arriving from a non-EU country, the following goods may be imported into Sweden by travellers aged 20 years and over (for alcohol) and 18 years and over (for tobacco) without paying customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of tobacco. You may combine these tobacco products provided the total limit is not exceeded.
• 1L of spirits over 22% alcohol by volume or 2L of alcoholic beverages under 22% alcohol by volume.
• 4L of wine.
• 16L of beer.
• Other goods up to the value of SEK 4,700 for air and sea passengers, or SEK 3,300 for other travellers.
Duty-free allowances are subject to change, sometimes at short notice due to policy updates or external factors. Prohibited items include meat and dairy products from non-EU countries, narcotics, counterfeit goods, and endangered species and their products (such as ivory, protected leathers, and certain plants). Restricted items include weapons, ammunition, fireworks, plants, and cultural artefacts requiring permits. This list is not exhaustive. Travellers should consult the Swedish Customs Service or the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information.
Prohibited exports include endangered species and their derivatives, cultural artefacts of historical value without authorisation, and narcotic or psychotropic substances. Firearms, ammunition, and military equipment require export licences. This list is not exhaustive.
