Weather in St Petersburg

Best time to visit

With short summers and long, cold winters, visitors to St Petersburg should wrap up warm. Fortunately, the city has a plethora of museums to keep you occupied if the weather outside gets too cold.

Spring (March to May) begins cold, with an average temperature of 1°C (34°F), but becomes warmer as the season progresses, reaching an average of around 16°C (61°F) in May.

Summer (June to August) is the best time to visit as the days are warm and pleasant, reaching a high of around 22°C (72°F). Thanks to the city’s northerly latitude, mid-June to early-July sees 24 hours of sunshine a day during the White Nights phenomenon.

Autumn (September to November) starts off fairly mild (14°C (57°F)) but then becomes cold quite rapidly (2°C (36°F)).

Winter (December to February) attracts only the brave hearted as temperatures fall well below freezing, reaching an average low of -9°C (16°F). However, the city’s International Winter Festival always draws a big crowd.
