Nepal things to see and do
The Everest region offers some of the world's most iconic trekking landscapes. Starting from Lukla, trails wind past Sherpa villages, suspension bridges and dramatic valleys, eventually reaching Everest Base Camp. Namche Bazaar, the region's lively hub, and the tranquil Tengboche Monastery provide cultural highlights amid towering Himalayan peaks. For the best views of Mount Everest itself, trekkers head to viewpoints such as Kala Patthar or Gokyo Ri, both offering clear, unobstructed panoramas of the summit. Mountain flights from Kathmandu also provide an effortless way to admire Everest for those not trekking.
Nepal's bustling capital, Kathmandu is a vibrant blend of ancient heritage and modern city life. At its heart lies Durbar Square, a collection of palaces, courtyards and intricately carved temples that showcase centuries of royal history, while the hilltop Swayambhunath stupa (the "Monkey Temple") offers sweeping views across the city. Nearby, the lively district of Thamel provides a colourful contrast with its maze of narrow lanes packed with trekking shops, cafés, bookshops, handicraft stalls and rooftop restaurants. It is the city's main hub for travellers, a place to gather supplies, enjoy global cuisine, experience nightlife or simply soak up Kathmandu’s energetic, multicultural atmosphere.
The Kathmandu Valley is the cultural heartland of Nepal, home to three historic royal cities — Patan, Bhaktapur and Kathmandu — each with its own Durbar Square filled with palaces, temples and richly carved wooden architecture. Beyond these ancient squares lie some of Nepal's most important spiritual landmarks, including the immense Boudhanath Stupa, one of the world's largest Buddhist stupas, and the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, a major Hindu pilgrimage site set along the Bagmati River.
The birthplace of Gautama Buddha, Lumbini is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world. The calm, expansive complex centres on the Maya Devi Temple, which marks the precise spot of Buddha's birth. Surrounding the sacred garden are monasteries built by Buddhist communities from around the globe, each reflecting distinct architectural traditions.
Flowing through the dramatic valleys of the Annapurna region, the Marsyangdi River is renowned for its striking scenery and adventure opportunities. Much of the Annapurna Circuit trek follows the river's course, offering walkers superb views of terraced hillsides, waterfalls and towering snow peaks. The river is also famous among thrill-seekers for its world-class white-water rafting and kayaking, with fast, technical rapids that attract experienced paddlers. Even for non-rafters, the Marsyangdi provides a scenic backdrop to some of Nepal's most spectacular trekking landscapes.
Set beside tranquil Phewa Lake and framed by the snow-capped Annapurna Range, Pokhara is Nepal at its most scenic. Visitors come for lakeside strolls, boat rides, and sunrise views from Sarangkot. The World Peace Pagoda offers a serene vantage point, while the city serves as the gateway to famous trekking routes, including the Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill circuits.
Tucked into the hills near Bandipur, Siddha Gufa is one of Nepal's largest and most impressive caves. Reached by a steep trail through forested slopes, the cave opens into vast chambers filled with dramatic rock formations, echoing passages and shafts of filtered light. Visitors descend by ladder into the cavern, where the scale is truly striking — its main hall is said to be large enough to hold an entire building. The experience is adventurous but accessible, making it a rewarding detour for travellers exploring the Kathmandu–Pokhara corridor.
