Where to stay in Latvia

Hotels

The standard of hotel accommodation in Latvia is generally high, with major international chains, boutique properties, spa hotels and family run businesses all part of the mix. Riga has the broadest range of hotel accommodation.

Grading: There is the Hotelstars Union grading system from 1 to 5 stars.

Camping

Many campsites benefit from picturesque locations and often provide spaces for caravans. Some even have huts that can be slept in. Many campsites have undergone official inspections and are categorised I-III. For more details, contact the Latvian Camping Association or the tourist office (tel: +371 2200 8808; www.camping.lv).

Other accommodation

Dozens of hostels can be found across Latvia, some of which are members of Hostelling International. Facilities vary, with accommodation typically provided in dormitories, although some double, triple and quadruple bedrooms are available. For more information contact the tourist office or Hostelling Latvia (tel: +371 2921 8560; www.hostellinglatvia.com).

Farm holidays and self-catering cottages (often Alpine-style chalets) are available in the countryside. This is a particularly good option for visitors to Latgale, where you can nestle among forest and/or enjoy a lakeside location. Some cottages have their own saunas. For further details, contact the Latvian Country Tourism Association (tel: +371 6761 7600; www.celotajs.lv).

Self-catering apartments are readily available in Riga and can often be hired by the night, as well as longer term. Rooms in guesthouses are available elsewhere. One of the easiest ways to search for private accommodation is through the Latvian Tourist Board.
