Travellers to Egypt must hold a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Passports should have at least one blank page for entry stamps. Visitors may be asked to show proof of onward or return travel and evidence of sufficient funds on arrival.
Passport and visa regulations are subject to change, and airlines may have different requirements. Information is correct at the time of writing; travellers should check with the relevant embassy before departure, particularly when transiting through a third country. Nationals of the United Kingdom, United States, European Union countries, Canada and Australia can obtain a tourist visa on arrival in Egypt or apply for an electronic visa (eVisa) in advance. Visas generally allow a stay of up to 30 days.
At Cairo International Airport, a new electronic Visa on Arrival system has replaced the traditional paper visa sticker. Eligible travellers can obtain their Visa on Arrival through self-service machines at the airport, through the official Visa on Arrival website or via its mobile application. Payment is made electronically, and the visa is issued as a QR code for verification at passport control.
At other Egyptian international airports, eligible travellers can continue to obtain a visa on arrival from the designated bank counters before passport control, or apply for an eVisa online before travelling. Egypt plans to introduce the new electronic Visa on Arrival system progressively at other airports.
Sinai Only stamps: For short stays of up to 15 days in the Sinai resort areas of Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba or Taba, some nationalities, including the UK, EU countries and the United States, may receive a free "Sinai Only" entry permission stamp on arrival. This stamp is valid only within the Sinai resort area.
Egypt offers tourist visas as either a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$30, while a multiple-entry tourist visa costs US$65.
Visas on arrival are valid for 30 days generally, while tourist eVisas are valid for up to three months.
Transit visas are not usually required for travellers who remain within the airport transit area while changing flights. Passengers leaving the airport during a layover, or transiting for extended periods, may need to obtain a visa depending on nationality and length of stay. Travellers are advised to check transit requirements with their airline or the nearest Egyptian embassy before travel.
Egyptian eVisas are usually processed within a few working days, though applicants are advised to allow up to seven working days in case of delays. Travellers should apply well in advance of departure, particularly during peak travel periods.
Travellers are not permitted to bring more than E£5,000 (Egyptian pounds) into Egypt. Foreign currency may be brought in up to the equivalent of US$10,000, but amounts above this must be declared on arrival. These limits apply to cash only. Visitors are advised to carry foreign currency rather than Egyptian pounds and exchange money locally as needed.
