Travellers to Ecuador must hold a passport that is valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Immigration officials may also request proof of onward travel and evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay. Passports should be kept secure, and carrying a photocopy or digital copy is advisable when exploring cities or remote areas.
Ecuador grants visa-free entry to citizens of many countries, typically allowing a stay of up to 90 days within a 12-month period for tourism purposes. This includes visitors from the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most countries in Latin America. Travellers from nations that are not visa-exempt must apply for a visa prior to arrival.
The Galápagos Islands operate additional entry controls. All visitors must obtain a Transit Control Card before flying from mainland Ecuador and may be subject to luggage inspections upon arrival to protect the islands' fragile ecosystems.
Visa fees vary depending on nationality and visa type, but tourist visas for non-exempt travellers generally carry a standard consular fee.
Approved visas typically allow entry for up to 90 days, though the exact validity and number of permitted entries may vary.
Transit through Ecuador does not normally require a visa if the traveller remains in the international transit area and continues to a third country within a short time. Those who need to enter Ecuador during transit must follow normal entry or visa requirements based on nationality.
Visa applications are to be made through the nearest Ecuadorian embassy or consulate. Some nationalities may be able to complete parts of the process online, but most applicants must submit documents in person.
