Euro (EUR; symbol €) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €200, 100, 50, 20, 10, and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1 cents.
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, shops, supermarkets and petrol stations. Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted, although some smaller businesses, cafés, markets and rural establishments may still prefer cash. It is therefore useful to carry some euros for small purchases.
Contactless and mobile payments are widely available wherever contactless cards are accepted. Apple Pay and Google Pay are commonly supported, particularly in larger towns and cities, although cash remains useful for smaller businesses and markets.
ATMs (Bankomaten) are widely available at banks and in cities, towns and tourist areas. Most accept major international debit and credit cards. Travellers should check any fees displayed before confirming a withdrawal, particularly at independently operated ATMs.
There are no limits on importing or exporting euros or foreign currency within the EU, but travellers carrying €10,000 or more (or equivalent) must declare it when entering or leaving the EU.
Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and bureaux de change, although exchange facilities are less common outside major cities and tourist areas. ATMs are widely available for withdrawing euros, but travellers should check their bank's overseas withdrawal and currency-conversion charges.
Austria duty free
Austria's duty-free allowance for travellers arriving from within the EU:
Travellers aged 17 and over can bring goods freely from other EU countries for personal use. Taxes must already have been paid in the country of purchase. Customs officers may question large quantities to confirm personal use:
• 800 cigarettes or 400 cigarillos or 200 cigars or 1 kg of smoking tobacco.
• 10 L of spirits or 20 L of fortified wine.
• 90 L of wine (60 L of which can be sparkling).
• 110 L of beer.
Austria's duty-free allowance for travellers arriving from outside the EU:
Travellers aged 17 and over may bring in the following without paying customs duty:
• 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250g of smoking tobacco.
• 1L of spirits over 22% alcohol by volume or 2L of alcoholic beverages up to 22% alcohol by volume.
• 4L of non-sparkling wine.
• 16L of beer.
• Other goods up to the value of €430 for air travellers or €300 for other travellers. The allowance is €150 for travellers under 15.

Prohibited imports include illicit drugs and certain goods derived from endangered species. Restrictions and special controls apply to firearms and ammunition, some animal products including meat and dairy products brought from outside the EU, and many plants, fruit, vegetables, flowers and seeds from non-EU countries. Protected wildlife and products made from endangered species may require CITES documentation. EU sanctions also prohibit or restrict the import of certain goods originating in Russia. This list is not exhaustive; travellers should consult Austrian customs for current requirements.
