Taiwan - Money
Currency & Money
New Taiwan Dollar (TWD; symbol NT$) = 100 cents. Banknotes are in denominations of NT $2,000, 1,000, 500, 200 and 100. Coins are in denominations of NT $50, 20, 10, 5 and 1.
Credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, and JCB are widely accepted in hotels, department stores, major restaurants, and large shops. However, smaller businesses, street vendors, and night market stalls often prefer cash, so it's best to carry some with you.
ATMs are widely available and many accept international cards, especially those located in 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and major banks. Machines typically have English-language options. Some ATMs may charge a small fee for foreign withdrawals, and daily limits may apply depending on your home bank.
There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency that can be brought into Taiwan, but amounts over US $10,000 (or the equivalent) must be declared on arrival. The same rule applies when leaving the country. The export of more than NT $100,000 in local currency is also restricted and must be declared.
