Currency & Money

Currency information

The official currency in Montserrat is the East Caribbean Dollar (XCD; symbol EC$), which is divided into 100 cents. Banknotes are available in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10, and 5. Coins come in denominations of EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2, and 1 cents. US Dollars are also widely accepted. The East Caribbean Dollar is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 = US$1.

Credit cards

Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in Montserrat, particularly at hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, car rental agencies, and many shops. However, some smaller businesses, especially in less touristy areas, may only accept cash, so carry some East Caribbean Dollars or US Dollars for smaller purchases.

ATM

ATMs are available on the island and can be found in main commercial areas such as Brades. These machines typically accept foreign-issued cards linked to Visa, Mastercard, and Cirrus/Maestro networks, and they dispense East Caribbean Dollars.

Banking hours

Mon-Thu 08:00-14:00, Fri 08:00-15:00.

Currency restriction

There are no restrictions on importing and exporting local or foreign currency up to EC$27,000 or US$10,000, subject to declarations above this amount.

Currency exchange

The Bank of Montserrat is the primary financial institution available. Located in Brades, it facilitates the exchange of major currencies, including the Pound Sterling (GBP), U.S. Dollar (USD), Canadian Dollar (CAD), and Barbados Dollar (BBD).
